  • Comments Thread For: Mayweather Stands Firm, Explains His Comments on Ali

Floyd Mayweather knew the moment he put himself ahead of Muhammad Ali in a recent interview with ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, that the backlash would immediately follow. The reigning pound-for-pound and box office king has never been shy about proclaiming his greatness - even adopting the acronym “TBE” (“The Best Ever”) as an alternative to his “Money” nickname.

A few days after he’s had a chance to think about the comments and the criticism that followed, the current welterweight and junior middleweight champion of the world remains unapologetic. He has that right to feel that way, especially since the comments weren’t meant to carry malicious intent.

He makes the right points. Ali said the same things about himself.

I respect that. But I don't consider Floyd the best ever in any weight class. He's the best today, and I'm a fan. But at 140 and 147 there were fighters at least as good.

I do think Ali was the best HW. Nobody can beat everyone historically, but Ali would've had the best percentage.

The biggest reason people say Ali is the greatest is mainly because of what he had to deal with outside the ring, and the stands he took on social issues. Floyd is also great but hes a tap dancing coon, he doesnt stand for anything, hes a fame whore.. I think thats why people (especially blacks) feel he shouldnt put himself nowhere near Ali. In judging an athlete, people tend to weigh in not just his performances but the athlete overall as a human being.

This is also why Jack Johnson is respected. He faced racism and backlash on a level not even Ali had to deal with, and he was a source of inspiration. Floyd is kinda like Jordan, of course they are great, only an idiot would deny that, but like i said people tend to factor in other things not related to sports, and those guys are nothing more than just great athletes, thats where it stops.

The people who love Pacman would tell you most of the reasons they support him has nothing to do with boxing. Hes kinda like their Ali... Floyd is a circus clown, a mascot, he stands for nothing and has no morals , and people will factor this in when judging him years from now.

A tricky situation Floyd is in again. To label yourself with something as egotistical as being the "The Best Ever", you have to at least accept all the hate and bask in it. You have to walk the walk, and just let everything play out until public perception changes. You can't sit there and give an interview making an analytical assessment about how you promote yourself and then turn around and say it's just who you are. If Floyd wants people to accept himself as being TBE in this century then he is going to have to be complacent and stay true to his character rather then being two-faced. He's his own man, and should take the responsibility of his actions as his own. Not ****in turn all PC. Floyd today is not that young, hungry, very uncensored, against the grain guy reminiscing back to the De La Hoya fight.

And then we have another great champion in Wlad who says:

I don't want to compare myself with any of the great heavyweights,... I'm still looking up to those guys
                    You can't buy class.

And this is why Floyd will always be excluded from true greatness.
