Comments Thread For: Photos: Matthysse, Provodnikov Brutal War Mega-Gallery

Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, New York - In a very anticipated battle of dangerous junior welterweight contenders, and it lived up to the hype and then some, Lucas Matthysse (37-3, 34KOs) started very strong and survived some very scary moments in the final three rounds to win a twelve round majority decision over former WBO champion Ruslan Provodnikov (24-4, 17KOs). Judge Don Ackerman scored the fight 114-114, while judges John McKaie and Glenn Feldmen scored the bout 115-113 in favor of Matthysse.

Matthysse begin the fight well with a game plan of jabbing combined with a right hand. Provodnikov ate shots as he tried to find openings and trying to cut of distance from Matthysse subtle movements.

In the second round Matthysse started to stand his ground firing combinations while Provodnikov continued to try and find an entry inside while eating uppercuts for his trouble. A hard combination caused a cut outside the left eye of Provodnikov. Blood and all - Provodnikov pressed forward backing Matthysse up.

Ruslan has one hell of a beard. The guy went through hell and still finished strong.

Still can't believe how many flush Matthysse shots he took.

I scored it 112-116 for Matts. Don't see how that judge had it a draw, that was strange.

Incredible chin and will on Ruslan. Although he lost clearly, he turned Lucas Mathyssee into a boxer the last rounds. He made Lucas doubt whether he could win open exchanges. Incredible thing to do to a formidable puncher. Never thought I would see that.

Ruskin is going to be eating through a straw if he continues fighting this way. He eats punches like their skittles. Smh

These Are The Fights That Could Leave BOTH Fighters Never The Same

Just a train wreck for both guys. I can not believe Matty endured that kind of beating to win this fight, and amazed at the chin Provo has and his relentless behavior; that guy would literally die in the ring if he had to. A win like this for Matty insures Amir Khan will never step back in the ring with Matthysse again. Provo, I have no idea where his career goes from here. Rios really shouldn't be an option; Rios has beaten nobody except the b/c level that beat him. Provo and Matty need to take the rest of the year off...

Agree. This fight was certainly competitive, but shouldn't have been that close on the cards. Why in the world HBO still employ Harold Lederman is beyond me. His score cards generally suck and he has THE most irritating voice in all of boxing. Get rid of that pompous nerd, HBO!!

I thought it was a clear win for Matthysee. Because of how many flush shots Provo took in the rounds he clearly lost, I think people (like Lederman) were tempted to give him the closer rounds. I think Matthysee could have put even more distance between the two of them if his corner had not repeatedly told him he was far ahead.
