Comments Thread For: Kellerman: Andre Ward Deserves a Gimme in Comeback

It isn’t likely to air on the network that he employs them as broadcasters, but HBO boxing analyst Max Kellerman seems fine with Andre Ward’s return to the ring June 20 amounting to a tune-up fight.

When asked about Ward’s potential opponent by host Jim Lampley on the new installment of HBO’s “The Fight Game,” which debuted Tuesday night, Kellerman contended Ward “deserves a gimme on his comeback fight.”

The undefeated Ward (27-0, 14 KOs), ranked No. 2 on the vast majority of pound-for-pound lists, hasn’t fought since he easily out-boxed then-unbeaten Edwin Rodriguez in a 12-round fight nearly 17 months ago in Ontario, Calif. The undisputed super middleweight champion reportedly was paid $2 million for that fight, which HBO broadcast, but HBO Sports executives haven’t demonstrated more interest in helping to pay the 2004 Olympic gold medalist millions to face low-profile opponents. Ward vs TBA huh? Is he gonna be the new Gary Russell? :-)

Seriously though, I think it's fair he has a tune-up after so long out and just 1 fight in 2 years 9 months. To expect him to go straight back in against Froch, GGG, Kovalev etc is unrealistic.

      Hopefully those fights will follow.....

I don't know about "deserves". Remember, it was Ward who kept himself inactive due to his beef Goosen. It's not as if he was sidelined with an injury.

If he wants a tuneup, fine. He needs to understand that he needs to accept very little money for it and will probably be on the undercard of someone else's fight.

No shit. Froch and GGG fans are so desperate to see him lose they want him to travel to Kazakhstan with 3 Kazakh judges and a Kazakh ref after a 2 year layoff to fight GGG at a catchweight of 162 with one hand tied behind his back.

I just hope that after he goes 12 rounds with some cab driver in Oakland, his fans don't immediately put him back as the #2 p4p in the sport. God knows that they'll be screaming that the monster is back, and everyone from 105-200 is avoiding him.
