Comments Thread For: Broner's Coach: Peterson Won, Fight Wasn't Even Close

Trainer Mike Stafford was in Lamont Peterson’s corner on Saturday night in the Barclays Center, when the scorecards were read in favor of Danny Garcia last night. Much like many people in the Peterson camp, he feels that Peterson won the fight running away.

“The fight wasn’t even close,” Stafford told BoxingScene.com “Lamont executed everything he needed to do, staying away from him using the jabs in the early rounds. Then in the later rounds he went for the kill and almost stopped him. The fight wasn’t even close.”

Stafford talks about Broner fighting at 141 or possibly higher. Wtf is going on with this sport lately? Will it just get to the point where weight classes don't matter and fighters will simply be allowed to fight at whatever weight is convenient? I understand catchweights are part of the sport but it's obv Broner doesn't want to move up to welterweight. It's obv Garcia doesn't want to move up, same for canelo, etc. Problem is these guys have outgrown their weightclasses and are in limbo. Everyone is so protective of their records these days instead of giving fans good competitive fights.

My point is fighters are outgrowing weightclasses but still hanging around with these ****** catchweights. If you can't make weight, MOVE THE FK UP!

Peterson didn't win those early rounds. That's the problem. He "boxed" way too much for the first half of the fight and didn't turn it up on Danny early enough. People see Peterson kicking Danny's ass in the last 4 rds and think he should win the fight.

Not lately, Pacquiao/Roach made that **** popular like 5 years ago. I mean if you mean lately as in boxing history in general yeah, but in terms of it happening in the last 1-2 years, not true, Pacquiao started that 'big fight catchweight' **** with his fights vs Cotto and Margarito 5-6 years ago.

Although I will say that right now it's really not that bad because it's not like it's being used as an advantage/disadvantage. It seems like a mutual agreement between two fighters who are both comfortable with it rather than a very popular fighter telling another lesser popular fighter to bend over. Even with Cotto vs Martinez it was merely 159lb CW that really was just a joke of a CW, just 1lb below the limit, which Martinez didn't even need. So it's not that bad right now. As long as no one is killing themselves to make the cw, I see nothing wrong.

It's bull****, fans love doing that. Take a 4-5 round rally and turn in to a shut out that the rallying fighter should have won clearly. Rallying late is not how you win fights, if you're not scoring KD's then forget it, 4-5 rounds will not eliminate the 7 or 8 rounds the other fighter already put in the bag. Judges can't give a fighter the first 6 rounds and then because he did poorly in the second half, use white-out on the one's he won because of the inspiring rally the losing fighter put up.
