Among the many drawbacks to a promoter being able to control both sides of a marquee fight is the disrespect felt by the fighters who are frozen out due to such politics.
It was in that vain that Chris van Heerden woke up frustrated on Friday morning when learning his planned May 9 showdown with Frankie Gavin was no longer on the table. van Heerden had agreed to all terms, only to learn that Gavin will now face unbeaten welterweight Kell Brook on May 30 in London.
“Waking up seeing Gavin fighting Brook just shocking!” van Heerden commented through his social media account. “I've signed contract to fight Gavin May 9th why do we sign contract?”
The fight was on the table as early as mid-February, even formally announced by Matcrhoom Boxing's press office. Speculation of the fight being canceled surfaced in recent weeks, especially as Gavin's name was linked to two more fights—a potential title eliminator with Tim Bradley, and a title shot with Brook.
Friday's announcement in London confirmed the latter to be the end result, the easiest fight to make as Gavin and Brook are both promoted by Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing.
While upset, van Heerden doesn't hold it against Gavin and instead sets his sights on new business.
“I'm happy for Frankie Gavin.
