  • Comments Thread For: Abril Withdraws From Title Fight With Mathews—Again

For the second time in as many attempts, a schedule fight between Richar Abril and Derry Mathews has fallen through, both instances coming within two weeks of fight night.

Barely six weeks after withdrawing from a March 6 date after falling ill, Abril has reportedly pulled out of their rescheduled April 18 clash at Echo Arena in Liverpool, England.

No reason has yet been given for the fallout. Abril’s team has refused comment, insisting that the issue will be fully addressed in the next week or so.

The news hardly sat right with Mathews and his team. As was the case the last time the fight fell off the schedule, Mathews will remain active, once again versus an opponent to be determined.

“Just to let people [know, I] am still fighting for the WBA world title on Abril 18th,” Mathews (37-9-2, 20KOs) declared through his verified social media account, although the WBA has yet to confirm such a scenario. “[I am] gutted Abril [h]as pulled out but got to stay focused on job.

“[I] am in this sport to fight the best but in my eyes Abril doesn't fancy this fight. [I] have spent 12 weeks away from my wife, family and home. [H]e could [have] been a man and told me weeks ago, but I have the best manager and team [a]round me who will get the best for me.” [Click Here To Read More]

I know I will sound very conspiracy theorist here, but I swear this happens way too many times for Warren fighters facing big overseas tests (mostly when the overseas fighter doesn't bring money). Last I can remember is Miguel Vasque, but I'm sure there were more.

    Probably just coincidence I know

great!!! I hope abril retires and we never have to see him fight again, he is better off taking care of his pig farm in cuba than boring us to sleep, i'm glad he got robbed against rios, he should have taken the hint at that time and so other cuban boxers, put up or shut up.

Thats a bit harsh, but each man to their own. I thought he put on a defensive masterclass that night and won the fight by several rounds. His defence was so good that when Rios got inside he could not do nothing and then got outboxed on the outside.

I guess Abril can't make the weight anymore and is just trying to hide it.

I have to disagree with two passages in this article.

"Their March '13 bout was hardly in the running for Fight of the Year...".

Abril vs. Bogere was actually a decent fight, especially by Richar Abril's standards. If I remember correctly, at no point did we hear boos or jeers. The crowd enjoyed the bout. Abril has been involved in many boring fights, but this one was watchable and it needs to be said.

"... as he struggled to a majority decision over unbeaten but unheralded Edis Tatli...".

Abril did not struggle at all, he looked his usual self and thoroughly outboxed Tatli in what should have been a wide unanimous decision. If you have not watched the fight then you should just say that he won by majority decision, which is a fact. However, you should not draw conclusions based solely on an official decision (or on BoxRec) and state a fighter struggled when you have no idea if he really did. If I use this logic, I would say that Abril lost a close fight against Rios...
