Comments Thread For: Castellanos is Confident of Beating Gary Russell Jr.

"You are a great champion, now it's time to recover," said Robinson Castellanos to his countryman and former world champion Jhonny Gonzalez - after the Gary Russell Jr. captured the featherweight championship of the World Boxing Council (WBC) by knocking out Gonzalez on Saturday in Las Vegas.

As the mandatory challenger, Castellanos is now in line to face Russell next. Because of this fact, Castellanos studied every detail of Saturday's match.

"I saw Jhonny look concerned in the locker ... Maybe he struggled to make weight and failed to recover. He looked weak," said Castellanos, who earned the shot with big wins over Ronny Rios and Ricardo "Rocky" Juarez.

This would be a decent first defense for Russell. Castellanos has earned his shot.

I expect some people to overlook him because he has 10 losses, but the fact is that most of these defeats came early in his career and that he was 5-8 at some point. He took unusual path to contender status, à la Salido. I have a lot of respect and admiration for those kinds of fighters, who despite taking many losses early in their careers, never gave up on their dreams.

Yeah, alo't of Mexican fighters have awful records that don't really tell the complete story at first glance.

Castellanos may have gotten past Rios and Juarez, but Gary is a completely different monster. Good fight, I wonder how Russel Jr. would deal with Robinson's awkward punches and uppercuts thrown from a distance.

Good fight, I like Castellanos' chances in this one. Russell has the speed to outbox Castellanos but Castellanos has range and height and he won't be waiting like Gonzalez, he'll throw punches and put more pressure on Russell.

Castellanos worked for it and I think he deserves it.. but a fight between Cuellar and Russel Jr. would be a great little scrap.
