Comments Thread For: Top Rank Prez Expects Big Things With New TruTV Series

truTV and Top Rank will partner to exclusively televise a live Friday night primetime boxing series beginning Friday, May 1, at 10 p.m. ET. The new boxing series, in association with Turner Sports and HBO Sports, will launch on the eve of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao pay-per-view fight with a card featuring two title bouts inside The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

Maximizing visibility, the inaugural series on truTV will feature three consecutive weeks of boxing coverage in May – all airing on the evening prior to a Saturday night HBO fight event – along with a slate of five additional fights to be scheduled over the remainder of the year. The schedule will regularly feature some of the most exciting, established young talent in boxing. Turner Sports and HBO Sports, with its long and rich history with the sport of boxing, will contribute resources as well as marketing and digital platforms in support of the new series.

"truTV will feature three consecutive weeks of boxing coverage in May"

    That's a pretty aggressive launch.

    Looking forward to this.

This is a good look. CBS is affiliated with Tunrner Sports. Working with both Haymon and Arum hopefully leads to cross competition and getting the best fights once this and the PBC series have a little more legs.

          Not sure that's accurate.

TruTV is owned by Turner, which has TBS, TNT, etc.

Turner is part of Time Warner, which has HBO.

Turner has a contract for NCAA Tournament games, just as CBS does, but that's different from being an affiliate.

It seems a safe bet these TruTV fight cards will be cross-promoted on HBO Boxing.

Given that they have fight cards on May 1st, 8th and 15th, they clearly want to try and get the maximum level of exposure from HBO's boxing schedule in May that includes Pac-May, the Pac-may replay/Canelo-Kirkland, Golovkin-Monroe.

May 1 and 15 are decent. A cut above ESPN FNF....I hope they get decent opponents for May 8.

CBS allowed that, which I thought was a good thing. They still have an affiliation. I should've used a better term like relationship, given affiliate means something relative to TV stations.

Yes, in the short term its more about TR/HBO fighters. I was thinking down the road.

I would think that, unlike in the past with their Outdoor Life Network/Versus deal, that Top Rank would want to put on a higher quality of fights, considering that TruTV is part of Time Warner, which owns HBO, where they do much of their business.

These fight cards look like they'll basically be an extension of HBO Boxing.

I'd take quantity over quality, which is subjective. FNF fights are better most of the times.

BTW, is Showtime dead or what?
