  • Comments Thread For: Mayweather-Pacquiao: 17 Years to a Superfight – 2002-03

by Cliff Rold - On May 2, 2015, boxing will finally have its Super Bowl. After five long years of he said-he said, it’s finally here.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Manny Pacquiao for the Welterweight Championship of the World.

But what if the road didn’t really begin at the negotiating table in late 2009? What if this collision course began just months apart, before anyone could have predicted this finish line?

In the second half of 1998, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao each won their first major titles and have stayed in or near the championship ranks for almost two decades since. The seeds of a showdown were planted then. They are blossoming now in what will be, even adjusted for inflation, the most profitable and maybe even most watched prizefight ever.

Over the course of this series, we take a look back at the championship years of each man, beginning with each of his first title wins and working our way towards May 2nd. Their development, historical achievements, highs and lows will be reviewed fight by fight with an eye towards the context of each contest.

Where were they in their careers? Using various ratings and historical resources as reference, how were they and each of their opponents regarded at the time of the fights? At the end, a comprehensive statistical review of each man will culminate in a final preview and prediction for the fight itself. [Click Here To Read More]

The Barrera win was world class. Manny has beaten some incredible fighters whilst still in their primes. It reminds me that whilst still the underdog and stylistically at a disadvantage he has been in with greats before and pulled out the wins.
Reading this has given me a little bit of hope.

          Some very minor copyedits needed:

          May 26, 2001
Floyd Mayweather Jr. (28-0, 20 KO, WBC, Ring Magazine Champion, Lineal) vs. Jose Luis Castillo (46-5-1, 42 KO, WBC, Ring Magazine #1)
          Mayweather-Castillo II was on December 7, 2002.

Barrera, a former two-time titlist at 122 lbs., entered the fight on an eight-fight win streak with four defenses of the historical Featherweight crown. He won the 126 lb. honors with a masterful rout of undefeated Naseem Hamed in April 2002.
          April 7, 2001.

Hugely enjoyable and well put-together read nonetheless.

I hope the fight is not a letdown. One example: If they clash heads and the fight is stopped, imagine all those people who paid big money to fly to Vegas, get a room, pay for a good seat. I would never go to all that in the off chance that something could happen. Easier right from my TV or a sports bar.

                great win by floyd!

                oh wait... that's not floyd

like what jmm said, it's pathetic that floyd and his fans like to cling on another's man win and claim as their own

I hope something like that does happen and the fight is a huge let down. It would serve everyone right.

For many people, including the same HBO announcers, Floyd really lost the first fight against Castillo (Compubox numbers: power punches 173/66 and total punches 203/157 all in favor of Castillo).
That wouldn't be the only time Floyd was protected from losing his zero. While fighting Judah, Floyd's uncle invaded the ring trying to attack Zab and while any other fighter would have lost by DQ, Floyd, who practically owns Las Vegas, got away with the shameful incident.
Some may argue about the Maidana fights but these are not as clear as those listed above.
