  • The Value of Larry Merchant

Larry Merchant remains the most compelling and, oftentimes, frustrating “expert analyst” in boxing. His indelible, halting on-mike persona has led many a couch potato to choke on his swig of beer and say to the shlub sitting next to him, “Larry’s at least three Martinis in now.” Indeed, Merchant’s flubs, mixed metaphors and off-the wall asides are as remarkable in their entertainment value as “unofficial” HBO scoring judge Harold Lederman’s shrill histrionics are annoying. Larry Merchant: Pernell Whitaker is a fighter who's made every fighter he's ever faced look bad; i mean he's a guy who could make Michelle Pfeiffer look bad. He couldn't make Felix Trinidad look bad.

He's fantastic, no doubt. Not quite in Bill Walton territory, but close.

There's a love-hate thing with Merchant. A lot of what he says gets on my nerves, but HBO broadcasts don't seem the same without him. We had a similar thing with Ian Darke in England who did all of the big British fights in the late nineties. He still does some today and honestly, I would rather watch a fight with him commentating than anyone else.

I think it's time for Larry to wrap it up. he's been slipping more than usual lately. messing up names and his final quotes have been kind of off kilter. dude is old and has got a lot of animosity that comes out in his assessment about bboxing and the fights he's covering.

he's like a plate of liver and onions, some people love it, some hate it.

Yeah man, the one he did recently about a kid he met that was back from assignment in Iraq; what the hell was that about?

Boxing's equivalent of Jerry Springer's final thought is supposed to surmise something about what we've just seen, not who Larry met in an airport.
