    Comments Thread For: Mayweather-Pacquiao: 17 Years to a Superfight - 1998

by Cliff Rold - On May 2, 2015, boxing will finally have its Super Bowl. After five long years of he said-he said, it’s finally here.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. versus Manny Pacquiao for the Welterweight Championship of the World.

But what if the road didn’t really begin at the negotiating table in late 2009? What if this collision course began just months apart, before anyone could have predicted this finish line?

In the second half of 1998, Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao each won their first major titles and have stayed in or near the championship ranks for almost two decades since. The seeds of a showdown were planted then. They are blossoming now in what will be, even adjusted for inflation, the most profitable and maybe even most watched prizefight ever.

Over the course of this series, we take a look back at the championship years of each man, beginning with each of his first title wins and working our way towards May 2nd. Their development, historical achievements, highs and lows will be reviewed fight by fight with an eye towards the context of each contest.

Where were they in their careers? Using various ratings and historical resources as reference, how were they and each of their opponents regarded at the time of the fights? At the end, a comprehensive statistical review of each man will culminate in a final preview and prediction for the fight itself. [Click Here To Read More]

There's always one person that tries to suck the enthusiasm outta something good. Count on it....every time.

Don't think it was intentional. Some people just get bored with prefight hype. Especially when it takes focus away from other good fights. Personally, I don't pay a lotta attention to prefight hype because it eventually makes me lose interest in the fight.

I am not a sheep. Mayweather and Pacquiao are not fighting to see who is the best of this generation. Pacquiao lost too many times during this generation. If it was Floyd who held all these these losses this would not have been an argument.

Bragging rights over the other man makes more sense. This fight is just what it is, a personal beef between Floyd, Manny, and their minions of fans and haters.

I disagree, this fight between the two undisputed WW champions is that, who is the best of this generation. Although Manny lost 5 times along the way he captured belts after belts in 8 different divisions. Great
Champions in boxing had loses as well, it's how you maintain and prove oneselves to be a great champion which Manny did. Plus Manny is in
there to write another boxing history.

As for Floyd, I wouldn't think that he is this arrogant egotistic maniac had he loses some fights. People admire his talents in the ring compare
the outside of it. So even if he have loses, boxing fans still tune in and
admire his works like the way they admire Manny.

This fight is more than bragging rights between the two combatants as well as their respective fans. This is by far the most if not the most anticipated fight of the century. Both have shown declines but make no mistake, both are 1 and 2 on the P4P list.
