  • Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: Canelo Fight Could Break Chavez Record

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya is expecting a record crowd for Saul "Canelo" Alvarez's fight against James Kirkland, which is currently targeted for May 2nd at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The date may move to May 9th if the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight is finalized for the 2nd of that month.

The last time Canelo fought in the venue, in 2013, he drew nearly 40,000 fans without a long promotion. This time, there is plenty of time to promote and HBO is planning to push the fight heavily because the bout is Canelo's first fight with the network since 2012.

Not against Kirkland he won't. The comparison is rather insulting. Canelo is closer to Chavez Jr than he will ever be to Sr.

If they price tickets at $5-10 then maybe. But is canelo v Kirkland a fight that would attract as much interest as Chavez v sweet pea. I don't think so.

I am not even interested in seeing this fight. Fat, out of shape Kirkland, who hasn't fought in a year and a half, isn't going to make a good fight.

If they want to break the record they better make ticket prices extremely low and even then I don't see it beating Chavez-Whitaker attendance. Chavez and Whitaker were the best fighters in the world at the time and both had way bigger fan bases than Canelo and Kirkland.
