Comments Thread For: Alfonso Gomez To Face Yoshihiro Kamegai on March 20

In a crossroads welterweight battle, Alfonso Gomez (24-6-2, 12KOs) has revealed that he's scheduled to fight dangerous Japanese puncher Yoshihiro Kamegai (25-2-1, 22KOs) on March 20th. The fight, which Gomez says is going to be televised by Fox Sports 1, will take place at Fantasy Spring Casino in Indio, California.

Breaking a two-year layoff, Gomez came back last July and won a tough ten round decision over the favorite Ed Paredes. Kamegai lost a fight of the year battle with Robert Guerrero last June, but then came back in December to blast out Oscar Godoy in four rounds.

You can't be serious. Besides the styles and skill level being totally different, Gomez has proven himself to be very competitive with fighters like Canelo and Shawn Porter. The one and only time he's been blown out was against prime Cotto in a bad style matchup where he came into the fight with a broken hand and coming off a serious illness in the middle of his training camp to boot.

Gomez's problem is that at the world level, he's just not athletically gifted with specifically his lack of punching power being his biggest issue. He has the skills and the intangibles though, and he's a good bit better comparatively than Vera. Gomez is fringe world class, Vera is(or at this point was) a high level club fighter.
