Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: PPV Decline Due To No Mayweather-Pacquiao

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya believes the pay-per-view audience is shrinking, because the two biggest names in the sport have been unable to reach an agreement to face each other in the ring - and fans are gradually displaying their frustrations by declining to purchases pay-per-view events.

The only disappointing numbers were for Cotto-Martinez, it should have done a bit more. Pac's foreign numbers are hard to evaluate, not incredible for sure though.

But when you look at Bradley 2 and the two Maidana fights, those were very decent. Mayweather's guarantee might be crazy but that's Showtimes fault.

Overall boxing put more PPVs last year than usual, and they did ok.

The two Maidana fights? Nobody knows the PPV numbers for the 2nd Maidana fight, the Mayweather camp demanded Showtime not to release them...

I don***8217;t have a Twitter account, but anyone that DOES have a Twitter account should put pressure on Oscar to personally inform Bob Arum that he is willing to move Canelo vs Cotto as long as a Mayweather/Pacquiao fight is signed. I don't think Arum is aware of that yet and this fight needs to happen already.

That doesn't explain why UFC is coming down as well. The reason PPV's are suffering is because there are to damn many PPV's. Not a single solitary one of the fights that were on PPV this year deserved to be on it.

Even if they did anywhere from 700-900, isn't that decent? If Showtime really thought that they would average more than 1 million for opponents with no crossover appeal, then it's their fault.

The 'big' UFCs this year were 545k and 400k. Pac selling 700-800 and May doing a little bit better, both fighting matchups that nobody demanded...is not that bad.

In fact, the sport of boxing beat the UFC PPV numbers for the first time in a decade!

Froch-Groves II also sold very well in the UK.

They took a massive hit this year. (stolen from sherdog)

The problem is the cost of ppvs, they have gone up.

It is probably the major reason why. and also the casual fans are slowly learning that they are being fed bouts unworthy of a ppv

Only Floyd and Pac are the only ppv attractions but their sales has gone down due to quality/popularity of their opponents. Todays opponent are not the Hatton, Margarito, Cotto, or JM Marquez.

Even the current UFC fighters, they dont have the popularity of the past years.
