  • Comments Thread For: Hearns, Hagler, Leonard, De La Hoya, Duran on KO Power

Are you born with knockout power? Is it a force of nature or a product of nurture?

At the World Boxing Council's 52nd Convention in the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas, nine former champions who are forever stars and often made opponents see stars, harbored few doubts about dishing out some forthright answers.

Between them Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran, Nigel Benn, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, Kostya Tszyu, John H Stracey, Evander Holyfield and Oscar de La Hoya...who were at hand, amassed a combined 351 knockouts in their galaxy of careers.

Excellent article. As for my theory, I believe that some people have knock out power congenitally - from day one they hit harder than anybody would expect, and I also believe that they can (and some but not all do) develop it as many of the fighters noted; however, I also believe that with the correct training a fighter can learn to maximize whatever power he/she has - and yes, I've known girls and women who can hit hard - , and that can make a real difference. This second group will likely never have the K.O. power of the elite, but they can develop and hone whatever power they began with, and it will make a significant difference.

Interesting article. Learning to put your weight into the punch is paramount, and punching from the correct angle. Some fighters seem to have radar to know where the opponent will be when the punch lands... not where he is when the punch is thrown. I think that element of surprise along with some pop, that's what drops your opponent.

If all it took were PEDs, then Paulie Malinaggi would be a lot more quite and have his @ss back in the ring.
