Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” - No Khan Artist, But Will Money Come?

by David P. Greisman - The fight between Amir Khan and Devon Alexander should’ve happened a year ago. It instead happened this past Saturday. It couldn’t have come at a better time. Now, as with last year, he’s angling for a fight with Floyd Mayweather. Now he’s more likely to get it.

It’s still far from guaranteed, wholly at the mercy of Mayweather and his desire for the bout that does the biggest business, though it’s not just whether the fight can make money but also whether it can be, well, made.

It’s still to be determined whether that means Mayweather will have the long-debated and long-negotiated mega-fight with Manny Pacquiao, a rematch with middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, or a showdown against one of many names at 147, coming up from 140, or even in the divisions above welterweight.

It’s still to be seen whether Cotto will sign for a big fight with Canelo Alvarez, presumably staking a claim to the May date that has become the traditional spot for Mayweather’s spring pay-per-views.

The fight between Khan and Devon Alexander didn’t happen a year ago. The negotiations continued on and on until the proposed fight was finally off. Alexander instead defended his welterweight world title against Shawn Porter and lost. (Porter ultimately lost the belt to Kell Brook earlier this year.)

Khan, who was planning a move up from the junior welterweight division, nominated himself as a worthy challenger. He took to the press and social media to lobby for a Mayweather fight and continued to do so as Mayweather conducted an online poll asking fans whom he should face in May 2014: Khan or Marcos Maidana.

Mayweather wound up facing and defeating Maidana twice this year. Khan dominated Luis Collazo on the pay-per-view undercard to Mayweather-Maidana 1. And he scored a wide decision over Alexander this past Saturday, bolstering his case for facing Floyd.

“I really believe I earned my shot against the best fighter in the world, which is Floyd Mayweather,” Khan was quoted as saying afterward. “I believe he'll have problems with my speed, movement and accuracy. I'm going to leave it to my team, and let's hope we get that fight.” [Click Here To Read More]

So PEDerson was doping in the first Khan fight too. Why is that not a NC?

Because he didn't test positive at the time. Mosley admitted to using EPO in the past, too, and his wins weren't overturned.

Please boxing journalists, don't shove this fight down our throats. Americans don't care to see Mayweather vs Khan right now no matter what experts or announcers or British media says. We do not want to see it right now. Push for Mayweather vs Pacquiao and Khan vs Brook next, winners fight.

Couldn't care less what Americans want or don't want. Brits and we continental Europeans do want Floyd vs Khan.

Now Floyd vs Ortiz, Guerrero, Maidana - those were fights no one anywhere wanted.

If May-Pac is next then who are we to argue? Other than that it is Khan-Mayweather and no one else makes sense. I mean who else? Bradley? The guy couldn't win a decision against a club fighter in his last bout. Brook? Has a belt, but still not as known as Khan over all. Marquez rematch lol?

The parameter of the discussion changes so much when it comes to Khan-May. First, "no WW win", smashes Collazo, then "no significant win at WW", smashes Alexander and now "no belt" or "Alexander didn't come to fight" or "he needs more fights".

Oscar don't call the shots of who Mayweather fights. Floyd should play the Oscar game on Oscar by not choosing to give Khan & Oscar a payday so that Khan is left to fight Brooks as Promoter Hearns stated. No PAC no Khan! Then pull an Arum to only fight an opponent that is only under Mayweather Promotions.

Why lol? Great matchup that would easily reach 1 million PPV line.

Wouldn't mind to see that outstanding rematch.

                JMM is a beast.

Juan murdered and totally exposed Pacquiao then lost via split decision against p4p number 3 Bradley.

Show some respect to boxing legend, not pathetic lowskilled fake aka Manny Pacquiao.

If he fought Brook and won - he would bring a belt to the table, which adds significant value to any PPV event.

Also it would give Floyd an option to fight Manny in May 2015 first.

I'd say it is more about timing than anything else, Khan has a legitimate claim to fight Floyd now, but he cannot demand to be next.

It is up to Floyd, not Princess Khan.
