  • Comments Thread For: Andy Lee: I Want To Defend My Belt in Ireland

Ireland's Andy Lee became the WBO middleweight champion on a memorable night in Las Vegas.

While Amir Khan was outpointing Devon Alexander further down the strip, little-known Lee was knocking out the undefeated Matt Korobov at the Cosmopolitan Hotel.

The 30-year-old, who formerly worked under famous trainer Emanuel Steward, stunned his opponent with a right hand and then moved in to finish the job in the sixth round.

It is a remarkable achievement for Lee and his new trainer, Adam Booth, and one that is sure to earn him bigger fights and recognition in Great Britain and Ireland.

Damn I feel so great for Lee, Steward's legacy, and both their families. And Adam Booth, of course.

If I remember correctly, though - Lee said in an interview recently that after the Chavez fight "he knew he had to get a new trainer." This was when Steward was still alive?

Did Lee say that because he knew the condition Steward was really in, despite Steward keeping it such a good secret from what appeared to be even the HBO cast.

It just sort of came out of nowhere that all the sudden he was doing really bad? Like there were no signs before - everybody thought he was doing fine, and had the "type of cancer you most likely recover from."

Either way - such a feel good win. Lee is a true Irish badass. The fighter with the courageous right hook.

That's actually very good match-up. I think Saunders is next for a title shot though.

Will Billy Saunders have a problem going into Ireland?

I just have a feeling that now when he has a belt Lee would want no part of GGG...
