LOS ANGELES -- Just after losing 30 pounds to play a sociopathic crime journalist in Nightcrawler, Jake Gyllenhaal has undergone another dramatic body transformation for his next role in Southpaw.

Gyllenhaal reportedly gained 15 pounds for the role of Billy "The Great" Hope, a left-handed boxing champion who is struck by tragedy. Southpaw director Antoine Fuqua recently told Deadline that Gyllenhaal's new role will "change how people see him."

How can an actor get in that kind of shape in a couple of months and a professional boxer with years of nutrition, training, conditioning still look like ...say, Nonito Donaire? No muscle definition, no obvious boxer's build. Is it all genetics?

      Or steroids?

It has to do with training and genetics. This actor obviously lifted weights hard. You can see in other movies where he is ripped but not big like he is here.

Boxers don't train in a way that sees them put on muscle. It's 99% cardio, even sparring is cardio. So when a boxer trains they will lose weight and not gain much muscle and what your left with is up to genetics. Like Donaire who is just skinny with little muscle definition. And no two are the same, look at kovalev and Stevenson. Kovalev is skinny with little muscle definition while Stevenson is jacked. Or compare a prime Oscar to most other fighters of his era and he looks like he couldn't curl five pounds.

Because Fighters don't train to build muscle mass they train for lean muscle and endurance. Actors train for the visual look not to actually fight. It's a huge difference.

Well realistically Nonito Donaire is not the same shape, I mean if you look at Pascal and Bradley for instance, they're both very muscular (dey black doe) but no, boxers don't really train for physique do they. . . However I suppose Jake had to, to sell the part, otherwise he'd go in there looking like The Albino Pepperami

Obvious roid's case. It's not possible to gain that much muscle naturally in such a short time. Still, who cares, it's not as if he's a real athlete.
