  • Comments Thread For: Antonio Tarver Focused on Getting Heavyweight Title

MIAMI - A fractured thumb that forced the cancellation of his scheduled September 29th fight with veteran Johnathan Banks (29-2-1, 19 KOs) may prove to have had a silver lining for 5-time world light heavyweight champion and 1996 U.S. Olympian Antonio "Magic Man" Tarver (30-6, 21 KOs).

The determined and still dangerous southpaw, who turned 46 this past Friday, squares-off Dec. 11 against Banks in a 10-round heavyweight fight, on a Goossen Promotions card, airing live on ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes from Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California.

The WBA will likely let him fight for an interim heavyweight title.

Yeah, or they could make a new belt for Champions Badly in Debt

Seriously don't understand what this guy thinks he can do at HW, he would get sparked out by the top guys at LHW and CW let alone HW.

        tarver should fight Kimbo Slice

Tarver and Kimbo Slice is a good fight. Even James two ton Toney is a good fight for the TARV. Aerrola is ready once that arm heals up.

I used to like Banks before he threw the Mitchell rematch. Now I hope Tarver gets the W.

It will be interesting to see how Tarver goes when he is not on the gas. But I hope he picks up the win, the man is in debt to Al Haymon now after he bailed him out of jail, so it's a win or his legs!

So sad... Tarver will be shut out of a heavyweight title run in the same way Holyfield was. Tarver is going to have to be in awesome shape and super focused to convince the powers that be that he is worthy of appearing on a major network, challenging for a heavyweight title.

Not sure if I'll be in school that Thursday, but if not then I might have to go check it out.

I don't understand Toney T....has he ever been hurt in a fight? I bring that up because it baffles me that a guy with such a sturdy chin has always refused to let his hands go.(outside of his volume pitty patting against Glenn Johnson)

He quietly quits in fights too-see the first RJJ fight where he decides to take time off or his wonderful performance against Eric Harding. He quit trying to beat Bernard after about round 3.

If you asked Toney T he would tell u he is a hall of famer-if u asked me he is a hall of fame talker that has been a B level fighter his entire career. I would love to interview him.

How many punches a round do you think he would throw against Wlad or Stiverne? Couple of half jabs in the corner before the bell....and thats it or do you think a few more during the actual round?

The weird part about it is, he's always been a good puncher.
