Comments Thread For: Hopkins: Trainer Deserves Praise for Kovalev’s Success

Bernard Hopkins was already quite familiar with Sergey Kovalev’s trainer before he stepped into the ring with the light heavyweight titleholder. After all, Hopkins had stopped John David Jackson — who held belts in two divisions — way back in 1997. And after Jackson retired, he worked as a member of Hopkins’ team.

Hopkins had taken aim at this before the bout.

It feels really strange to see Hopkins so humbled. I never thought I would see the day. I like this version of him a whole lot better.

      Maybe he's calling it quits.

I think he's grown into a realistic marketing man and he knows he's to protect his legacy. Part of his legacy is how you carry yourself. I think he knows it would be frowned upon if he acted negative to being outboxed and outworked vs TRULY feeling someone like Calzaghe didn't clearly beat him.

He also may realize he is 49 years old and he isn't SUPPOSED to beat Kovalev. He's probably riding a moral victory by not being stopped and still having his wits about him vs a big, young puncher.

He doesn't need to act like Broner to keep relevant. He's in the books. He's well off. And can act like a class act.

Hopkins is a showmen he knows how to sell a fight, which not only makes him richer but his opponent also makes money

However the fight is over, the show is over, back to reality, no more selling a fight, he's being his true self now

We need boxers like Bhop, boxers such as Ward, Triple G, etc..are great boxers, but horrible showmen, they can't sell a fight

Being humble and quite is all good, but without a some form of controversy, this sport would die

You have to be loud and ****y, bravado, 9 times out of 10 it works...

John David Jackson was one of the most important variables in the whole thing. He's done a great job with Sergei. Nice to see him get a nod from Hopkins

I never once believed for a second Hopkins doubted Jackson as a trainer, all that talk was nothing but pre fight hype trash talk. Hopkins chose to have Jackson work with him for years for a reason.

If you notice, Hopkins usually takes shots at the trainer as well as the fighter before fights, whatever angle he can get, and even promoters which was the case against Tavoris Cloud; all of the pre fight trash talk was about putting Don King out of business since as Bernard said, Cloud had a boring personality and couldn't sell a fight so he went after King which made for a better storyline to sell.

I am glad he publicly gave Jackson props though because sometimes he can go to far in the pre fight antics which causes grudges. This time I think there is respect all around.

I think he was buying into his own hype. While he was winning, he wasn't exactly fighting real good fighters. Kovalev isn't a Murat or Cloud, he's the real deal. I think this just showed Hopkins that at his age he can't compete with the best out there.
