  • Comments Thread For: Algieri Would Be Too Much For Danny Garcia, Says Arum

Top Rank's CEO Bob Arum rejected some of the industry rumors, that Manny Pacquiao's upcoming fight with Chris Algieri is a prelude to a 2015 showdown between the Filipino superstar and WBC/WBA 140-pound champion Danny Garcia.

Pacquiao faces Algieri (20-0, 8KOs) on November 22nd from the Venetian in Macau, China. The fight takes place at a catch-weight of 144-pounds. Pacquiao's Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach would like to see his boxer drop down to 140-pounds next year. Roach has discussed, in several interviews, his preference to see a fight between Pacquiao and Garcia (29-0, 17KOs).

Typical Bob "The Snake" Arum fork-tongued double talk:

    September 2, 2014:

Bob Arum has acknowledged De La Hoya's efforts and says he's open to working together to see if the sides cannot work out a marquee fight.

"That's correct. Oscar called me at the ballpark, and we arranged to have our talk. When I finish with the tour in New York, I'll be flying to Los Angeles," said Arum, 82, under whom De La Hoya turned professional after winning an Olympic gold medal in 1992.

"I'll be meeting with Oscar over the weekend. I have always had a fatherly relationship with Oscar. We went through a whole period of his life, and, of course, my life, together, and I have very warm feelings about him."

"I think that we can talk about Pacquiao and Garcia. That's a fight that might make a lot of sense," said Arum, who has spoken to Pacquiao and his advisor, Michael Koncz, about Garcia.

"I've mentioned the possibility of that fight to Manny and Michael for down the road, and obviously, that's something that might be of interest to our side, and I'm glad that they have expressed interest from his side. We haven't talked about it, Oscar and I, but that's a fight we would be interested in talking about."

September 12, 2014 (After Oscar met with Arum again):

Another obstacle has been the friction between manager Al Haymon, who has a large group of fighters tied to Golden Boy, and Arum:

“Let me give you a perfect example of what we’ve talked about with Al. I love the Danny Garcia-Pacquiao fight,” De La Hoya said. “We’ve talked to Al about it. He likes it, he’s open to it. Before, there was nobody talking, at least we’re heading to deliver the fights that the fans want to see.

Now that Haymon is onboard, Arum says Garcia is not a match for Algeri, much less Pacquiao. This is why Oscar needs to be careful with his new found love of Arum. Someone needs to remind Oscar of how Arum operates:

    February 23, 2011:

This week in Fort Lauderdale, Arum fired back at his former protege.

“They’ve got no background in boxing,” Arum, actually 79, said Tuesday of the HBO matchmakers Golden Boy Promotions advises. “They rely on Oscar, who’s a dummy. Oscar is one of the ******est guys I’ve ever met. I’m just saying what it is. The guy is really not smart. Forget just ‘not smart.’ He’s not just even average.

“I remember when we were bringing him up, we’d have to write the whole script for him. Then you give him the script and he’s great, as long as you keep him on the script. To have an original thought in his head …”

Nice way to prop up Algieri. Playing fantasy boxing simply won't do it.

How about if Chris gets blown out by Pac in a couple of rounds, is he going to say the same thing.

      Arum is such an idiot

serious garbage!!! He is the fake PR version of Floyd Mayweather. Over hyped, fights D and E class fighters. Only difference is, he is new to it. Give him a couple of years and he will move up to Floyds level and fight B- and C class fighters.
