    Boxing legend Leon Spinks -- who famously beat Muhammad Ali in 1978 -- is hospitalized in Las Vegas, TMZ Sports has learned ... and his friends say the situation is very serious.

    Sources connected to the 61-year-old Olympic gold medal winner tell us ... Spinks underwent surgery this weekend and there were complications during the surgery.

    We're told the situation seemed dire at first ... but Spinks seems to be doing better.

        Leon was always on his own trip, 2 include all the crap he took & sniffed, but always liked him... after the last 6 months in the Marines, that he spent in the brigg, he xposedClay 4 what he was, 7 w/all the shots he hit him w/all in his 8th fight...GET WELL LEON.
