Comments Thread For: NJ's Larry Hazzard Wouldn't Have Licensed Jermain Taylor

New Jersey boxing commissioner Larry Hazzard would not have licensed Jermain Taylor if promoters attempted to bring the Taylor-Sam Soliman middleweight title fight to The Garden State.

Hazzard, who recently resumed his duties as commissioner of New Jersey’s State Athletic Control Board, is surprised the Mississippi Athletic Commission didn’t take the same stand. Taylor, 36, will challenge Australia’s Soliman for the IBF middleweight championship Wednesday night in Biloxi, Miss., just six weeks after authorities in Taylor’s native Arkansas charged him with two felonies following an Aug. 26 incident at Taylor’s home in which Taylor shot his cousin.

a government official ignoring the constitution (due process, presumption of innocence, etc.). What a shock.

I wonder if Hazard feels that ANY person arrested in NJ should lose ANY license issued by the State, or does it only apply to fighters?

I wouldent either and I would advise everyone not to go to his fights especially if you are white. Taylor seems to have a few screw lose and after his last rant and his legal troubles, it is not outside of realm of possibilities that he will shoot up an event.

I love it when these guys talk about having undergone lots of tests at this or that clinic. Not a single doctor or consultant that administered any of those tests will have recommended fighting again to Taylor. In fact, every single one of them, if asked, will have told him to never set foot in the ring again.

The American Medical Association's official position is that boxing should be banned. Note this line:

..medical experts determined he wasn’t more at risk than other boxers to suffer a brain injury
That's a very different thing to clearing someone to fight. Basically they're saying that you still stand a significantly greater chance of suffering a brain bleed than anyone else, but maybe not a significantly greater chance than other fighters.

There's something ridiculous about people in boxing using these tests as a sound medical basis for continuing in the sport, when no doctor would ever recommend you doing so.

Jermain Taylor needs to Retire. Hopefully Soliman convinces him to do so tonight in the ring.
