  • Comments Thread For: Koki Kameda-Roberto Vasquez on SHO Card, 11/1

According to multiple sources in Panama, a deal was reached for Roberto Vasquez (32-6-2, 22KOs) to face WBA 'regular' bantamweight champion Koki Kameda (32-1, 17KOs), 27-years-old, on November 1st at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago. The fight will be a "non-title" encounter.

The card is a Showtime televised tripleheader. Koki's younger brother, Tomoki Kameda, defends his WBO bantamweight title on the card against mandatory challenger Alejandro Hernandez. Tomoki recently signed with powerful boxing manager Al Haymon.

Koki Kameda isn't the "regular" champion at bantamweight any more.
He ditched the title and ran when he was ordered to face Anselmo Moreno.
For some reason he is ranked as the mandatory challenger at super-flyweight by WBA while the other legit org WBC/WBO/IBF don't even rank him at all.

He generally looks for the path of least resistance to win one of the paper alphabet belts so he certainly wasn't going to go after Cuadras or Narvaez. He'll fight Kono in Japan and win by SD, like he always did at bantamweight

Koki Kameda has won three "world championship" in his career.
Two of which he won was for a vacant title (WBA of course).
Only once he actually fought a champion which was at flyweight when he challenged Daisuke Naito.
Now he's eyed to win his 4th title at super flyweight but since he is being suspended by Japanese boxing commission the fight with Kohei Kono is very unlikely to take place.
My guess is, WBA will crown Kono as the "super" champion thus leaving the "regular" championship vacant which Kameda can pick his opponent to win.

It is interesting that Haymon seems to be bringing the Kameda's to America, it is probably a better fit for them and they are kind of interesting.

Koki probably is the weak link though but he can probably do alright with Haymon's guidence.

Tomoki looks to be the best of the Kamedas, he studied in Mexico and has broadened his horizons. Hybrid vigour, East meets West style, hook to the liver, easy to find, hard to discourage. Koki? Haymon wants everybody, nobody is too small for Haymon, world domination.
