  • Comments Thread For: Korobov-Lee: WBO Sanctioning Likely, Eyed For 12/13

Unbeaten middleweight Matt Korobov has watched a slew of opponents avoid him like the plague, even with the prospects of an alphabet title at stake. Good news appears to be on the way for the 31-year old contender from Russia, as a proposed showdown with Ireland’s Andy Lee is on its way to receiving official sanctioning as a vacant title fight, with the final determination expected to be made in the next few days.

“We receive a letter from Frank Warren, the promoter in England. He requested for the (World Boxing Organization) #3 contender Andy Lee to fight (Korobov) for the middleweight title,” confirmed WBO President Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcarcel. “A decision will be made (this week), but I don't see any problem with the fight being sanctioned for the middleweight title.”

Korobov stated in an interview how he'd rather fight Andrade than Saunders because he wouldn't have to goto England. That might mean he'd prefer to have the fight in Vegas on the Bradely undercard on HBO. But than again there'll be more money for the Lee fight in the UK or Ireland, also the winner looks set to fight the winner of Saunders-Eubanks (Korobov comes out on top of this little tournament).

At any rate it would be in HBO's best interest to televise these fights so they can build a solid opponent for Golovkin that their main****** audience will be familiar with.

Top Rank isn't doing him any favors guaranteeing the Sanuders/Eubank winner a shot and Korobov likely having to fight back to back in the UK especially if there's no US TV for the fights. He's all they have at MW you think they would back him more along with HBO as a potential Golovkin opponent for unification. Slightly strange although he will probably get better money for fights in the UK and Arum may just be confident in his ability to win those matchups in spite of location.

It has been something of a joke this little round of BS, but I'm OK with the Lee fight (though both Andrade and Quillin would have been more legitimate opponents).

I'm not particularly keen on the first defense going to the UK (despite living there) but I think that Korobov should be able to handle Saunders - and likely Eubank (if it sounds like I've got that ass backwards it's simply that I've a pretty good idea of BJs ceiling, but Eubanks is less clear although he is far less proven), even with a little local cooking.

It's either GGG or Murata next.... hoping for GGG, Murata could ease by with some scorecard help with activity if he can survive the counter shots

Forgot about Murata but he's still a ways off title contention if they keep moving him this fast and take some risk he could get there in 3 or 4 fights. Korobov would absolutely pick him apart though Ryoto's only chance would be to endure alot of punishment keep throwing and throwing while getting countered by massive bombs then have Matvey gas in the second half of the fight.
