  • Comments Thread For: WBC, IBF, WBA Agreement Points, Third Meeting Set

The leadership of the World Boxing Council, the World Boxing Association and the International Boxing Fedeeration have achieved an historic breakthrough, establishing a combined agreement protocol on the issues of weigh ins, scoring, instant replay, a tournament to crown one world champion, and coordinated input about amateur boxing.

The big three met in Playa del Carmen, Mexico on September 24th. This was the second Summit and the progress achieved was outstanding.

Dr Gilberto Mendoza (WBA) , Daryl Peoples (IBF) and Mauricio Sulaiman (WBC) were the nucleus. They were joined by Gilberto de Jesus Mendoza, WBA Vice- President; George Martinez, WBA Continental chairman, Lindsay Tucker, IBF Championship director; Bob Logist, European Boxing Union President (EBU); Charles Giles, British Boxing Board of Control (BBB of C) President; Juan Sanchez, WBC Treasurer; Rex Walker, WBC Vice –president; Avel Gonzalez, WBC General Counselor; Victor Cota, WBC Statistics and Media Director; and Alberto Leon, WBC Legal advisor.

I Love The Idea, Long Overdue; BUT Does It Apply To Floyd Mayweather???

Put Floyd in that tournament to determine ONE champ. That ain't happening!!! He fights to a different set of rules. When is the last time Floyd was ordered to a Mandatory Title Defense to the Number One Challenger??? Probably on the 12th of Never!

Let's pull the gross WBO into the mix while we're at it. Let's have some tournaments:

      Lightweights:
      Mikey Garcia
      Terrance Crawford
      Rod SALKA (lol)

      Jr. Welterweights:
      Danny Garcia
      Lamont Peterson
      Adrien Broner
      Lucas Matthysse

      Welterweights:
      Floyd Mayweather
      Manny Pacquiao
      Kell Brook
      Keith Thurman

      Jr Middleweights
      Canelo Alvarez
      Erislandy Lara
      Miguel Cotto
      Tim Bradley

      Middleweights
      Gennady Golovkin
      Quillin
      Solimon
      Chavez Jr.

Call me a cynic, but I'm just very skeptical about this one World Champion per division plan considering that as the WBA participates in these meetings they are still handing "regular" and "interim" championships out like candy. If you were serious about one champion per division, why wouldn't you do your part in curbing the fact that your own organization has 3 champions per division in the majority of the divisions? Why aren't you ordering the super champs to fight the regular champs, or the regular champs to fight the interim champs? Why are you instead just sanctioning more fights for vacant "regular" and "interim" championships between undeserving contenders?

I'll believe it when I see it.

Something tells me that Quigg, Santa Cruz, and Frampton are not happy with all this talk of only one world champion.

It's just for money. The more belts, the more fees. You can give out all the super, duper, magnificent, gold belts you want. None of that will matter if they agree to have one champ. That will be sweet.

Less champions? If they exercised their full authority(which for some reason they haven't already done so), the WBA alone could have 51 "champions" if you count the interim, regular and super belts they have.

As it stands today, they have 39 champions. And I know they are giving the SMW interim championship out soon, so that will be 40. Plus, the regular WW title has been vacant since Floyd unified with Maidana in May, so when they choose to dish that out, they will have 41.

Keep in mind that the WBA is one of 4 organizations. Just from doing a quick tally. The other 3 sanctioning bodies have 3 interim champions combined, one will be unified in October, another in November.

The WBA is just sick. They should be euthanized.
