  • Comments Thread For: Payano Shocks Chemito Moreno, Captures WBA Crown

Mesquite Arena, Mesquite, Texas - Juan Carlos Payano has upset the long reign of Anselmo "Chemito" Moreno with a six round technical decision to win the WBA bantamweight championship. The fight was cut short and went to the cards due to a cut above the eye of Payano from a clash of heads.

Also on the card, junior middleweight Charles Hatley (24-1-1, 16KOs) survived a third round knockdown to dominate late replacement Richard Gutierrez (24-14-1, 17KOs) for the remainder of the fight. All three judges saw it 98-91.

Super featherweight contender Roberto Marroquin (24-3-1, 17KOs) stopped Miguel Soto (12-4, 12KOs) in three rounds. Soto was down twice

Clash of heads occurred during the 2nd round and Payano fought with urgency from then on, taking the fight to Moreno, landing more punches and winning a just decision.

Seems to be some dispute on that. Be interesting to see the fight on YouTube if/when.

Well, Pabon was the ref and he is terrible, but it was ruled an accidental butt. Let's hope Moreno gets a rematch.

Payano vs Jamie McDonnell could be interesting if a rematch isn't arranged.

Yeah, it doesn't sound like a legit win for Payano. Moreno is one of those hard luck guys.

There definitely needs to be a rematch, I did not get the chance to see it, but I think Bad refs warrant rematches. Who knows how the fight would have turned out if it kept going. That is a really good name on Payano's weak resume.
