  • Comments Thread For: Lopez-Castaneda Scoring Scandal Explodes in Puerto Rico

Jose ‘Wonder Boy’ Lopez and Roberto Castañeda waged war on August 16, in a bout featuring multiple knockdowns, point deductions and scorecards that–while reflecting the proper winner–didn’t quite add up to what took place in the ring.

An ongoing investigation being conducted by the Association of Professional Boxing Officials has revealed that tampering may have been involved with the scorecards from the aforementioned super bantamweight bout, in which Lopez escaped with a majority decision.

The round was reportedly scored 10-7 by all three judges, claiming that the fight could be not scored any lower. Under the unified rules from the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) ***8211; under which the Professional Boxing Commission of Puerto Rico serves
Does this rule apply here in Las Vegas? Because if it does then Pacquiao vs Marquez round one did not have a mistake in the first round.

Man what a disgrace. They should also investigate the Canelo-Lara case while they are at it.

It no longer applies and hasn't for more than a decade, which was the big controversy from the 1st fight. Burt Clements scored the round under the old scoring system as opposed to the unified rules that were "recently" (at the time) adopted by ABC.

If only that fight was in Puerto Rico, then yes the commission could investigate that one as well =)

            A fight worth watching again.

Wow what controversies over the scoring, (good to hear tho)even though I think he barely won the fight(WonderBoy Lopez). I wouldn't be surprise if they overturn the decision to a DRAW or fight again. But I doubt somebody gets in trouble.

anybody caught altering or trying to minupulate judges should be BANNED for life from boxing. CJ Ross is a perfect example.

that pr kid couldn't have been a bigger douche in the ring that night.

i wouldn't mind, just for how he acted in the fight alone, that the decision be changed.

José A. Sánchez Fournier / jose.sanchez@elnuevodia.com published a note where judge Cesar Ramos directly accused Penagaricano of "changing" illegaly his way of voting the first round. Ramos stated that altering the cards is a flagrant violation and that he was asked first by "Toto" to score the round 9-7 but because Ramos refused then "Toto" himself took action to change the score. Ramos also stated that apparently judge Torres was also approached by Penagaricano and he did the same. Originally the score after 4 rounds was 36-35 for both Ramos and Torres but according to the official report of CBPPR at the end it was changed to 36-34. It seems that as long as "Wonder Boy" fights in the island he will be protected by the commissioner Penagaricano (and according to the paper this is not the first time "Toto" has done something wrong).
