Comments Thread For: De La Hoya Not Worried About Canelo-Lara PPV Numbers

Oscar De La Hoya isn’t concerned about fatigued fight fans passing on paying $60 to watch Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara go at it July 12 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Alvarez versus Lara is one of the best matchups of the year thus far, but their 12-round junior middleweight bout will headline the fifth boxing pay-per-view event in an 18-week span, which equates to one every 3.6 weeks. Alvarez’s domination of fellow Mexican Alfredo Angulo (22-4, 18 KOs) on March 8 in Las Vegas was the main event of the first of those five pay-per-view shows. It drew nearly 400,000 buys, which exceeded expectations even of those at De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions and Showtime Sports, the distributor of the Alvarez-Angulo and Alvarez-Lara cards.

Canelo/Angulo did decent #'s because it was perceived as a real fight against 2 mexicans. This fight will do significantly less because of Lara. He has no strong following and he will come to stink it out. He's not going to fight Canelo. He will try and box cautiously from a distance. This is a terrible style matchup.

I hope this fight does well. It's one of the best matchups of the year between two very good fighters. We need to support these type of matchups. If we do, then they will continue to happen.

It IS the best matchup of the year, and its like the people on this board want it to fail. This is the fight us boxing fans should be telling the casuals about instead hoping for its demise. Very nice undercard and so far the best fight on paper. How can boxing fans not want to order this is beyond me.

Does anyone have a clue who will be fighting on the undercard and whether there will be a co-mainevent to this?

If Canelo can take the win in impressive fashion just think how big the Cotto vs Canelo clash would be?
            Puerto Rico vs Mexico...
Man SURELY... Surely that will generate a lot of attention I don't want to guess numbers but it certainly in my eyes looks like a better fight than the Mayweather vs Canelo fight.

Only poor people and Mayweather fan girls want this fight to fail.. If it wasn't for Mexicans, boxing wouldn't even be alive still. Yes you have your certain fighters like sugar ray, pacquiao etc. etc.... but Hispanics/latinos have kept this boxing sport alive period.

Mares returns on the undercard against Oquendo.
Mauricio Herrera faces Johann Perez and also JuanMa will be on the card.

Tomoki Kameda is on the card too. Don't think he'll be on the televised portion though.

Canelo/Cotto would be a major event especially at MSG.

                    Thanks bud!

DAMN that is a pretty stacked card indeed that has got me much more excited for next week lol.
Its good to see they're pushing for big things for Canelo but this Lara is no push-over, Canelo name will rocket up If he can beat a highly skilled opponent like Lara.
