Comments Thread For: DeGale's Trainer Jabs Hunter, Talks Froch and Kessler

James DeGale needed to produce a big performance at Wembley Stadium last month, something he certainly delivered. On one of the biggest nights in British boxing history, the 2008 Beijing Gold medallist produced his most impressive performance as a professional stopping Brandon Gonzales in four rounds. His trainer Jim McDonnell looked back on the fight and onwards to the future in a telephone conversation with BoxingScene.

Nothing much to be said other than Virgil hunter is the most overrated trainer in boxing today, point blank.

I was very disappointed in Gonzalez to be honest.

DeGale did what he had to do and performed well.

I just don't think DeGale has the power or defense to make it to the very peak of the division.

Froch would put him down inside 6 rounds. The way DeGale sits back on the ropes is just suicide against hard accurate punchers.

I also think that Kessler can pull out a win over Degale, despite being past his prime he has experience and a very decent chin.

DeGale is on par with Groves and even Eubank Jnr - both these fights would be interesting at domestic / European level.

As for Virgil Hunter...just look at the reinvented Amir Khan for all the proof you need!

I wouldn't say he is overrated. His fighters love him, but with Virgil Hunter he is just a very unconventional trainer - he has a philosophy approach, very much like Phil Jackson(not comparable success wise). He mentally prepares you, James DeGale is a Gold medalist he probably has the greatest upside out of all the current Britain fighters (super 6 really boosted Froch's legacy, the level of comp) - I want to see Degale and Ward in the not so distant future..

DeGale does have power, but he really should have stopped some of the guys he fought, but I've said for a while it'll take the big fights to bring out the best in DeGale. He just struggles to get out of second gear against lesser opposition which is why he's flattered to deceive quite a bit.

If his gameplan wasn't so safety first he could have stopped Groves IMO, but he never went for it, despite rocking Groves back with most of his shots, particularly to the body he just sat back and let a Groves do his thing.

OLE RONALD MACDONALD JUST DONT KNOW WHEN TO KEEP HIS SQUEAKY LITTLE PIE HOLE SHUT.
complete ****, wanker. (as adam booth said after the groves fight after all the gob in the pref fight presser with the betting etc).
whilst i very much dislike degayle, he is however a very good boxer and he would need to move on to a more complete trainer such as virgil hunter for advancement.
            hes facked that now.
