Comments Thread For: Viewed Against The Classics, Guerrero-Kamegai Fades

Though Robert Guerrero’s return to the welterweight ranks Saturday night was expected to be a chance for the long-absent “Ghost” to reestablish his brand in one-sided fashion, it turned out to be a comeback defined more by breathtaking violence than dominant destruction.

In fact, for nearly every second of the 2,160 seconds they spent in the ring together, Guerrero and comparatively unknown Japanese import Yoshihiro Kamegai set about jabbing, hooking and upper-cutting each other into a reddened-faced, swollen-eyed 147-pound oblivion.

It was brutal. It was punishing.

And for those who like nothing more than two fighters in a perpetual real-time car crash – regardless of their world standing or the stakes involved – it was bliss.

Not understanding why the author felt the need to compare it to the greatest fights ever... Nobody else was.

I can understand where he's coming from. I was there live, and after about 5 to 6 rounds you knew neither fighter had enough power to put the other one away so it just basically became a "you hit me I hit you" kind of match that you knew would last the whole 12 rounds. Entertaining fight none the less.

I too understand where he's coming from. It lacked a certain drama in terms of those involved as well as dramatic points in the fight (knockdowns, seriously hurt, on last legs, etc)

However, I too don't see the reason it needed an article comparing it to the great fights just to demean it. Any fight that's fresh because it just happened will cause for conversation. It was a fight that was better than expected, but I don't remember anyone claiming it to be one of the greatest and most dramatic fights of all time. It was a competitive fight that many say COULD be a contender for fight of the year so far. No one even said he was even a LOCK for fight of the year.

i don't read this guy's stuff, but i agree with the headline.

barnburner, war, call it what you want. it wasn't fought at a high enough level, or competitive enough to be a real classic.

they settled into a pattern in spots. it was a brutal pattern, but it was still a bit predictable for a fight that's being touted as the fight of the year.

I'm with you on this, I don't really care for his articles. Although I did read this one.

What a weird article, who was ever comparing that to "the classics"?

Harsh it was a good fight. Yeah it was no Lucas v Molina. But really you can say that about pretty much any fight.

it's almost like there's two guys that the author (a) doesn't like and (b) doesn't care about putting on a great show and ... he's like yeah it's was ok but Hagler v Hearns was better so yeah, this gets the thumbs down from me ... I mean seriously wtf??

It's like you're next door neighbour just bought a brand new BMW and you walk up to him. Kinda shrug and say 'yeah it's not bad I guess, but why didn't you get a Mclaren P1?'
