Comments Thread For: Groves To Return on 9/13 or 9/20, Abraham in 2015?

Super middleweight contender George Groves (19-2, 15KOs) is slated to return on September 13 or 20, according to his promoter Kalle Sauerland of Sauerland Event. Last month, Groves was knocked out in the eight round of his rematch with IBF/WBA 'regular' champion Carl Froch. A crowd of 80,000 fans packed Wembley Stadium to see the rematch.

A winnable fight for Groves, but he needs to be wary of 2 things...

    1. Disgraceful hometown cooking like in the Abraham-Shihepo fight.
    2. Abraham makes fighters pay for any mistakes, especially late, and Groves is prone to lapses in focus.

If Groves sticks to boxing like he did against Johnson and Froch (early in their first fight), he should be OK. But if he tries to be all manly and start trading with Abe, it's lights out (Froch II).

      3. Abraham hits much much harder than Froch
      4. Abraham takes a better shot than Froch

If Groves has signed with Sauerland as reported, this is the kind of fight he should be looking for - a win over Abraham would keep him firmly in the SMW picture - but a loss to AA would represent a significant backwards step.

If I was more convinced of Groves' ability I would recommend this fight wholeheartedly, but I would suggest he took a less risky fight first as things stand.

AA can **** and is also the kinda cagey, defensive fighter who will let his opponent wear themselves down before going for the late finish - this may be a problem stylistically for Groves and I look forward to seeing how he deals with it,

AA at his best was out of his league against Froch. AA is a shadow of himself now.

Groves is too fast. He won't even have to work that hard. You can see AA coming a mile away.

someone said that groves was trying to be macho in the 2nd fight, actually it kinda looked like he was too cautious, i had him winning the first 3 or4 rds. but the next 3 froch just started throwing volume and groves was just jabbing and doing very little. he was knocked out because froch is a great puncher lol.

Talk of a "unification" fight with Abraham is weird since Groves doesn't have a title now and Abraham, at this point in his career, is the B- or C-level, second-tier belt holder that guys like Groves generally fight to get their first belt. Who else is he going to fight to get a belt, Bika? And if so, is Abraham much of a "step up?" Seems like he should just fight Abraham, because he could probably whip him now.
