Comments Thread For: Sulaiman: HVY Division Beginning To Blossom Again

There once existed the belief that so goes the heavyweight division, so goes boxing itself. For as long as the sport has existed, it has been led by a dominant heavyweight champion.

Times have changed dramatically, as the once glamour division has threatened to become an afterthought. World lineal heavyweight king Wladimir Klitschko is among the most dominant champions in history, though many point to the weak field over which he presides in dismissing his accomplishments.

Below Klitschko, there hasn’t existed much hope for an unseating of the king. But it doesn’t mean the division is short on drama and entertainment. The majority of it is taking place under the au****es of the World Boxing Council (WBC), the one title not currently in possession of the multi-belted champ.

It is becoming more interesting right now as Vitali vacated and Wladimir wants to unify all belts. There are a handful of very good fights for him if it all plays out well from the political and business side of the game.

Finally there are some exciting potential matchups at heavyweight.

That's what was needed, young fighters who are actually good to provide some competition for Klitschko.

People are funny. Huck/Povetkin great fight happens. But it's just as sign of how bad things are somehow. Then Arreola/Stiverne II happens and great fight with an American and a guy who wants to be a US citizen-things are getting good again! Things aren't all that good or all that bad just like a few year ago.

They should just create the WCH Heavyweight Championship Belt (Wlad.Cant.Have) then everybody will be happy. I don't think anyone really wants to fight for any of his belts and get their faces smooshed & cuddled. Everyone just wants the little hot potato that Stiverne is momentarily holding onto because its obviously the EASIER belt.

I'd still say reduce the Cruiser limit to 190lbs (original limit) and make the Hucks and Pablos fight as HWs. More excitement.

I agree, but I'm OK with it. Stiverne, Wilder, Arreola etc will never reign as champions but allowing the west to hype them up as "the return of the heavyweight division" ultimately just results in more $$$ being made when some ex-Soviet crushes their dreams.

Like the american HWs of old, they look good enough fighting EACH OTHER to generate a buzz.
