Former two division world champion Gerry Penalosa has praised newly crowned WBA featherweight super champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire for overcoming the adversity of a nasty gash under his left eyebrow caused by a series of head-butts by former champion Simpiwe Vetyeka of South Africa to win a 4th round unanimous technical decision in Macau last Saturday.

Penalosa told the Manila Standard that Donaire has “inborn talent, his timing was perfect and he showed great footwork. It was a fine performance.”

The knockdown was nice, the rest of his performance was kind of meh. It wasn't terrible as Vetyeka is a quality fighter and the clashes of heads were a big issue. Also it was only 4 rounds and the fight was only really starting to heat up, so it could have been a fine performance.

I can't go that far though based on what I saw.

No fighter should have to forfeit their newly won title for a technical decision after 5 rounds, this was not a conclusive fight by anymeans and i hope Donaire gives Vetyeka as shot to redeem himself in a rematch, just as he gave Donaire his shot he owes Vetyeka. Literally one bad round cost Vetyeka his belt.
