Comments Thread For: Golovkin 7/19 on HBO If Chavez PPV Falls Through?

Gennady Golovkin vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. would be a prime candidate for 2014 Fight of the Year, but if the much-anticipated super middleweight showdown cannot be finalized, there might be a backup plan.

Abel Sanchez, who trains Golovkin, told BoxingScene.com Wednesday that if a deal can’t be made for Golovkin-Chavez on July 19 at the Forum in Inglewood, Calif., then the middleweight titleholder would stay at 160 pounds and face someone else on the same date in New York City.

Geale or Sturm would be good contingency opponents.

Less than 2 months from their fight, and they'll really go at it.

Weird that's it 99% done, yet they need a contingency plan.

          Better safe than never.

We thought it was all good a while back, then heard it was going to fall out a few days ago.

JCC Jr said negotiations were back on... I didn't even know they were off

Yea Golovkin is important to HBO so best to have some options available to them because who knows what is going on with JCC Jr..

Always better to be safe than sorry, and despite Golovkin being new to the scene he is not exactly a spring chicken.

Couple of things, first off I respect chavez jr a lot while he might be spoiled brat at times. One thing you can't say about him is that he's scared or ducking anybody. The kid has balls. Unlike others, and for the middleweight monster known as 3G it's only a matter of time b4 he ascends to the top. He just needs that signature opponent,Martinez,Chavez, kid chocolate whoever. Gennady is one of the most relentless pressure fighter I've ever seen. That left hook to the body is nasty. 3G destroys anybody at 154,160 or 168 not named andre ward. l.

                  pointless

This fight is a snooze from day one. No gain for GGG, and Chavez will be running for is life. Another disappointing fight for GGG fans to watch. Surely there must be better quality fight for Golovkin to go to?

Sounds like you havnt seen Chavez fight, he will not be running.

Chavez has a big fan base and this will give GGG more exposure.

It will be an exciting fight if it gets made.

GGG wanted Martinez but he decided to fight Cotto instead.

Its a good fight to stay busy while he waits for the Martinez v Cotto winner.
