  • Comments Thread For: Curtis Stevens: I Got Tureano Out, Now I Move On

Curtis Stevens was behind on the scorecards, down with just a minute to go in the fight, when he landed a big left hook that hurt Tureano Johnson. Stevens followed Johnson to the ropes and unleashed a flurry until the referee stepped in, a stoppage some felt was premature.

But even though Stevens was losing when he scored the come-from-behind victory, and even though the victory came with a bit of controversy, the middleweight from Brooklyn feels that he did what he was supposed to do in getting the win — and now he wants to move on to something other than a rematch. I knew he wasn't going to be on board with a rematch. Can't really blame him. It is what it is.

Yea, I agree. Stevens just has nothing to gain from a rematch.

Even if he doesn't get Quillin or Kirkland, he should be able to get those types of guys if he wins another fight or two, and he can pick guys more like Ma***ski, or bigger names, rather than risk another fight vs Johnson for small pay.

          Curtis got schooled

He lost to a better man that night and on the same night he got lucky with a bad ref job. There should be a rematch.

Tureano Johnson deserves a rematch or atleast a spot on a NBC sports undercard against a ranked opponent.

This happens all the time. If a guy is defenseless and taking punches, the ref will stop the fight, moral of the story is keep throwing punches or don't complain about getting TKO'ed.

He was definitely dazed but the ref did stop it too early - perhaps only by a few seconds though because if Tureano had continued taking shots with his hands down he probably would have been knocked down or out. It's a tricky call for a ref to make but if a boxer has his hands down and isn't defending even for a few seconds the ref can legitimately stop it rather than risk severe injury. Ref isn't a walking MRI scanner, the only way he can judge the condition of the brain is through the actions of the fighters and in boxing a few short seconds can be the difference between life and death.

I would have been okay with a rematch but I understand Stevens. Each should move on from this and seek bigger and better things.

For Stevens, a Kirkland fight looks damn attractive. For Tureano, he could probably fight Angulo.

Rematches are few and far between these days. Sad state of the game.
