Merlito Sabillo puts his strawweight title and unbeaten record on the line as he travels to Mexico to face Francisco Rodriguez Jr. Their bout headlines Saturday evening on TV Azteca.

Also scheduled, Jorge Paez Jr. faces badly faded former 140 lb. titlist Vivian Harris. The bout is a consolation prize for the second generation boxer, who was originally scheduled to serve as the opponent of choice in a farewell fight for legendary countryman Erik Morales. I'm going to have to try to find this on YouTube. Sounds like the new champion had a dominant performance.

The way the article begins with talk of Rodriguez benefiting from a hometown advantage, your initial impression would be that controversy was somehow involved, when Rodriguez earned every bit of that victory by beating Sabillo from pillar to post round after round. It doesn't matter if they fought on the moon, Rodriguez wasn't going to be denied tonight. I knew he'd give a good account of himself given the fact that he went 7 rounds with Gonzalez two divisions above and was still firing back when the ref intervened. The guy has a great set of whiskers and was just walking through Sabillo's best punches. Hopefully we'll see Rodriguez against another Nicaraguan, Buitrago, who I thought had done enough to earn a decision against Sabillo in their previous fight that ended in a draw.

For future reference, people from Guyana are referred to as Guyanese, not Guyanian. I'm one.
