Comments Thread For: Jayson Velez Return Eyed For Cotto vs. Martinez Card

Undefeated Jayson Velez (21-0, 15KOs) might return on June 7th, as part of the Miguel Cotto-Sergio Martinez undercard at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Velez was last seen in action last October, winning a ten round unanimous decision over Dat Nguyen. He was scheduled to return on the undercard of February's rematch between Aber Mares and Jhonny Gonzalez, but the card was canceled when Mares withdrew with an injury.

Interesting. It could mean a Golden Boy fighter fighting on a Top Rank/Dibella card. In terms of the actual fighter, he's an interesting prospect. From what I can tell, he is the best prospect in Cotto's stable.

The funny thing is that Velez reminds me of a small Martinez in some ways yet he is from PR and promoted by Cotto. The kid has skills though, I rate him pretty high...he can accomplish big things.

I see some skills but not sold on him. Time after time I see him being open to be countered. At times gets fatigued and a bit sloppy. I want to see how that pays off when the competition picks up. I'll rate Orlandito Del Valle over him. Good talent but not sold yet on him. My opinion.

Only in the promotional sense. He's still undefeated, young and promising. For now, he needs a quality win to put his name in the news again, but the clock is ticking.

I agree. He's solid but people were acting like win over Salvador Sanchez 3 actually meant something.
