  • Comments Thread For: Martinez Could Face Rubio if No Miguel Cotto Deal

Sampson Lewkowicz, adviser to WBC middleweight champion Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez (51-2-2, 26KOs) is currently negotiating a deal for his boxer to defend his crown against three division beltholder Miguel Cotto (38-4, 31KOs) on June 7th at New York's Madison Square Garden.

Lewkowicz will know either way if the fight will happen by the end of this month. If a deal is not reached, Martinez would be forced to make a mandatory defense against Marco Antonio Rubio. A backup plan is already in place to stage that fight in Argentina, possibly at the legendary Luna Park.

Not good for Sergio. That leaves 2 fights left on his HBO contract and Cotto won't wait, he'll go to Canelo

I'm pretty sure the Cotto fight will get done.

Martinez needs either this fight or the Golovkin fight. He isn't getting any younger and his fighting days are flying by fast.

Will probably defend against Rubio in Argentina in June if Cotto falls apart. He'll wait for Cotto again and we'll see what happens from there.

I still believe this fight will get made. The circumstances are just too perfect for it to make sense at this exact moment (Cotto coming off a fight where he looked spectacular which would make Martinez win stand out more + enough hype to make a high grossing PPV event). I just cannot wait for Martinez to make the mistake of accepting a fight with Golovkin.

What are you babbling about? In case you haven't noticed I am a fan of fighters with losses, to me Ls are nothing but the sign of a true warrior. I am a big fan of Pacquiao, Cotto, Chavez Jr, Margarito, Arreola... etc... I've always supported them and will continue to. If you do not cherry pick, an L is inevitable in the fight game.

Who beats him? He would absolutely trash Martinez, destroy Froch, spank the hell out of Ward (who I believe has the highest chance of making a competitive fight)... I cannot see any fighter from this current generation beating him. Golovkin is just too strong, too skilled, too good. If you want to beat him, you'll have to throw and then it's just a matter of time before he catches you with something heavy.

SMH at the people bashing him..isn't he the champ? Didn't he earn his title? Has he refused to fight anyone that's put a contract in front of him? He's being dictated to by a guy who needs him just as bad as he wants the payday. Cotto is only fighting at 160 for the belt and no other reason beyond that but he seems to want it on his terms because he's in his own opinion the upside. Well sometimes being the upside just isn't enough especially when the other guy has something you really really want.
