Comments Thread For: Mares Vows To Show His Hunger, Drive Against Gonzalez

Former three division world champion Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14KOs) went back to his roots, as he is currently training in Mexico City for his rematch with WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47KOs). The fight is scheduled for February 15th at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The first time they met, earlier this year at the StubHub Center, Gonzalez scored shocking first round stoppage to reclaim the featherweight crown.

well mares can say he's up for this fight, but so will Gonzalez, gonzalez wants to prove it was no lucky punch, that he's better,so just like mares will be well prepared so will jhonny

I think it goes without saying it wasn't lucky. The fact that it's what they train and have the intention to do means it isn't lucky, but even more so when it's set up, feinted and then landed perfectly by a multiple time champ.

The question is whether Gonzalez is just a bad match up for Mares. Particularly as Mares moved up weight divisions so quickly and Gonzalez is a big, tall, still near his prime FW that didn't land just one punch, but many that put Mares down more than once.
