By Thomas Hauser - Magomed Abdusalamov woke up in unfamiliar surroundings on Christmas morning. Quite possibly, he was unaware of the change.

On November 2nd, Adbusalamov suffered a life-altering brain injury in a fight against Mike Perez at Madison Square Garden. For weeks, he lay near death. He was at Roosevelt Hospital for 52 days.

On Christmas Eve, Magomed was transported to Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw, New York. The hospital specializes in physical rehabilitation for patients who have suffered catastrophic brain injuries. Russian tycoon Andrey Ryabinskiy has committed to paying for at least two months of rehabilitation. The cost of Magomed’s stay at Helen Hayes Hospital will be $51,000 a month. A sobering article... Miracles happen, let's all pray for one. May God bless him.

Something Hauser said seems unlikely. As bad as the NYSAC officials at MSG dropped the ball, I doubt Mago would've been okay if they hadn't. Even if he got to the hospital in a timely manner, it was no guarantee he would've been seen immediately. (Trust me, I have plenty of experience with NYC hospitals.) In a sorry chain of events, the most devastating fact is that Magomed's corner and the referee didn't stop the fight earlier. But I'm not really trying to point fingers. The fact is we're all to blame.

I'm just hoping Magomed beats the odds, that he's able to walk and talk and live a reasonably normal life. His career might be over, but his life needn't be.

I don't really find any words right now. Just sending my best wishes to Magomed and his family.

This is the shit part of boxing, the part which we often forget has a chance of happening during fights but it's one whose shadow looms over every fight, waiting...waiting...

              Get well soon Mago

That was very unfortunate, and something that should force the powers that be to reevaluate how crucial and desperately necessary reforms in boxing is and finally come through on solutions.

Can't say if anyone did their jobs incompetently before the fact, but there certainly had to be a doctor who analysed him properly, and seeing no immediately, noticeable and potential detrimental effects of such trauma, sent him on his way believing he would recover just fine as have other athletes caught in similar situations.

This will be a sad Christmas for his family and loved ones.

May everyone on this forum have a blessed and safe Christmas and New Year.

Absolutely awful. This guy's life may have basically ended in the ring that night. I hope he's at least able to recover to some sort of functional level, but who knows? What a terrible tragedy.
