definately probably took a serious chop to the ribs, which broke a rib causing it to puncture a lung or other vital organ. back in the 70s in haiti they hadnt the best medical care nor medical knowledge to have cured him properly. just my guess tho

This is kinda what I got as well. What seems to come accross is there it ain't quite clear what happened to his dad, but it doesn't sound impossible that he was injured in some kinda fight or perhaps had a heart attack during a competition or something, but it could just be a story that came from his mum to give him something to cling onto about his dead father.
