Comments Thread For: Stevenson Says Time Not Right For Kovalev Fight

The HBO doubleheader scheduled for Saturday night clearly has been scheduled to intensify interest in what would be an intriguing unification bout between hard-hitting light heavyweight title-holders Adonis Stevenson and Sergey Kovalev.

Canada’s Stevenson (22-1, 19 KOs) will make a mandatory defense of his WBC 175-pound championship against England’s Tony Bellew (20-1-1, 12 KOs) in HBO’s main event from Pepsi Coliseum in Quebec City. Russia’s Kovalev (22-0-1, 20 KOs), the WBO’s 175-pound champion, and Ukraine’s Ismayll Sillakh (21-1, 17 KOs) will square off in the first televised fight at 10:15 p.m. ET/PT. Stevenson overlooking Kovalev's Campillo win.

Regardless, it's clear Stevenson wants a bigger payday, he should fight the Pascal-Bute winner, that would be a war in a big domestic fight.

Assuming he gets past Bellew that is...

There's other fights I want to see first, namely Bute/Pascal vs. Stevenson/Bellew and Kovalev/Fonfara.

          Exactly.

Kovalev kills this dude. Hopefully HBO pushes for this fight soon.

why is this news? STevenson said after the last fight he wanted to fight bhop or another big money fight before Kovalev. I get it, he's older and doesn't have many paydays left.

That old line drives me crazy, just admit you don't want to fight him and you hope somebody else beats him first so you don't have to take the chance yourself, that fight should be next.

Kovalev is there for the taking. I don't like how a world champion has only gone 8 rounds once in his career. How on earth will he make that step up at world level now he can't have anymore learning fights?

I think he's been brought on too quickly here. Could get gassed if sillakh can push this into the championship rounds.

HATE when fighters say, "who has he fought?" about guys who have beaten fighters just as good as they have. Kovalev knocked Campillo out, and Campillo clowned Cloud. It's so ridiculous for Stevenson to say that.

Kovalev is already at the world level, the world level hasn't been able to take him deep.

                    Stamina is a concern.
