Comments Thread For: George Groves: My Chinny Rep Cost Me The Fight

Super middleweight contender George Groves was very close to securing one of the biggest upset victories of the last few years, when he scored a hard knockdown of IBF/WBA champion Carl Froch in the first round and then outboxed him for the majority of fight. Groves was ahead on all three of the official cards, when Froch got him in the some trouble in the ninth round and the referee jumped in to stop the action.

Groves admits he was hurt, but nowhere near as hurt as Froch was in several of the previous rounds. The Manchester crowd was furious with the stoppage by referee Howard Foster.

Groves, also, relativizes things... I expected more resolute protests from him...

I don't think it had to do with reputation. Groves was just unlucky to be in the ring with such an incompetent referee. It's outrageous. Even Froch has to feel urged to give Groves a rematch. The debacle warrants killing kittens but I'll refrain as long as I'm guaranteed to see a rematch with a different referee.

Groves is 100pc correct and it was a reprehensible stoppage. BUT I think he was tiring and Froch was getting stronger. Would have been nice to see if Groves could have weathered the storm or Carl get a decisive victory.

Froch done himself no favours in post fight interviews. All he needed to say was Groves was winning, the stoppage was early but that he was getting to Groves and would have KO'd him. Instead his stock has dropped like a stone.

Doubt it, Froch has always talked a load of bollocks outside the ring, what he does inside is why people like him.

Froch has been in this situation before

After the taylor fight most on here were calling him a bum and saying he got lucky and that the next time he fought a world class fighter hed get stopped

after dirrell again he was a bum, got a robbery and abraham was going to kill him

then after ward he was washed up, a bum again, and bute was going to end his career

Froch's career is full of ups and downs, don't bet against him rising again

Ref ruined what could have been one of the greatest ever British fights. A good stoppage is one that everyone agrees was correct. That just felt wrong.

It would of been better if Frouch had said that but he is not to blame I have seen a few bad results lately as we all have but blame is with the inept people in control of this sport the time has come to do something about it.
British boxing is dropping to the level Italy was at in the 80s inept judges and referees, the British boxing board of control is turning in to a laughing stock around the world Robert Smith needs to take action suspend these inept officials put them in charge of four rounders until they work there way up to championship level again, be seen to take some action or stand down and let someone stronger step up and show these so called officials they are not irreplaceable.

I agree totally. For me last night was beginning to mirror Froch-Taylor. I'm taking nothing away from Groves.. He far surpassed what I expected from him. I thought he was going to get steamrolled but fair play to him.. He was winning the fight. That said, errors were creeping in and as history has proven, Froch thrives on coming on late.. This is what sets him apart from others. Nobody can blame Froch for the referee's stoppage, and nobody should bet against him coming back stronger. There are big things ahead for Groves too though. Considering his young age and relative inexperience, he's more than proved himself.
