  • Comments Thread For: Hopkins Compares Murat Win to Segundo Mercado Draw

It’s rare to see Bernard Hopkins take many flush punches, yet that’s what happened against Karo Murat on Saturday. Though the first thought might be that Murat’s success in hitting Hopkins is because the 48-year-old is finally showing his age, and slowing because of it, Hopkins himself said that he got hit because he was trying to put on a better show.

“I felt like I threw more punches,” he said afterward. “They told me I have to be a crowd-pleaser. Sure, I took a little bit of blood, but that’s what they want to see.”

Murat was 147 of 486 in total punches, a 30 percent connect rate, going 120 of 336, or 36 percent, with his power shots, according to CompuBox. Hopkins was more active and more accurate, and he came out with a wide unanimous decision win. [Click Here To Read More]

Those Mercado fights were good, fun scraps to watch. The first one really should not have been a draw, though - home cooking just like the first Pascal fight.

He's too old to be taking too many flush shots, if he was gonna take flush shots, he should have done it when he wasnt so old.

Don't wait until you're an old man to put on a show.

Wouldn't call the Pascal fight a hometown decision. Pascal did his thing in the first fight. Caught Hopkins by surprise. Gassed late but still did enough to win that one IMHO. Many people didn't and still don't know about Jean Pascal so it's easy to go for the known or your favorite of the two fighters in a closely contested bout. I respect what your saying though, no beef jus chuckin my opinion in.

I don't think Hopkins has ever looked worse in a fight than he did in the 1st Mercado fight. Looked worse there than he did against Dawson, Calzaghe, Taylor, Wright or Jones Jr. He still should've won the fight by about 3 rds, but he looked awful. I believe the altitude of the outdoor venue they fought at had alot to do with his performance in that fight. They were fighting at something like 12,000 ft. above sea level and Hopkins had only a few days to become aclimated with the climate. When you see how easily he destroyed Mercado in the rematch just 4 months later, i think it validates this theory.

Fortunately decisions aren't rendered based on what compubox numbers reveal. Unfortunately there is a growing number of dolts who actually take such stats seriously.

If he took too many flush shots when he was younger he wouldn't be here now. So yea... pick your poison. Lol

You think Rios or Pacquiao will be in a ring when they're damn near 50?

Except Murat didn't land nearly as many punches as Hopkins.

                    Here's what CompuBox had:

                    Total punches:

                    Hopkins: 247 of 565
                    Murat: 147 of 486

                    Power punches:

                    Hopkins: 184 of 373
                    Murat: 120 of 336
