  • Comments Thread For: Schaefer on Canelo’s Contract, Cotto, HBO, Jabs Arum

Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer, is fuming over the continued reports that Mexican superstar Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30KOs) is a free agent (or about to become one). Schaefer once again stated to BoxingScene.com that Canelo is under a long-term agreement with Golden Boy. During a recent media interview in Mexico, Canelo’s manager, Eddy Reynoso, told reporters that he plans to sit down with Golden Boy in the near future to map out a “three fight plan in 2014.”

There is an ongoing legal battle that pertains to Canelo’s alleged breach of contract with All Star Boxing, run by CEO Tutico Zabala. In the legal documents, Zabala claims that Canelo was still under a valid contract with All Star Boxing when he initially signed with Golden Boy several years ago.

Canelo is going to be Canelo no matter who he signs with! He is out looking for the next junior welter weight star to jump on and build up his image for the next mega fight just to lose again.

Personally, I thought Bradley/Marquez was better than Mayweather/Alvarez, but most people are in to all the bells and whistles that GBP sells, so to each his own. And the non-PPV bouts on HBO are still the best televised boxing events offered in America. Schaeffer should just worry about matching Canelo, Thurman, and Quillin properly in 2014, since they all have quality opposition waiting for them in their respective divisions.

Schaffer made me laugh with his shot against Sampson Lekowitz. I can tell he doesn't like how he finds fighters and brings them to Top Rank.

I'm happy I'm subscribed to both networks and I'm not playing favorites. But what has intrigued me is that I'm noticing more fighters at GBP, are leaving their managers that advised them there, and signing up with Al Haymon.

Seems like If you sign up with GBP, sooner rather than later, you will sign up with Al

              Cotto/Martinez > Cotto/Canelo.

After how horrible Canelo look against Floyd (worst than Guerrero), Canelo's stock went down big time. I think Cotto will maker more money fighting Martinez, not only that it's a chance for Cotto to be first Puerto Rican to be a 4 divisional champion.

In addition it will be a much bigger win for cotto.

HBO and Top Rank fanboys already trying to defend old Arum. Basically Golden Boy telling HBO come to us if you want to make $$$$, that Bradley-Marquez PPV was terrible and if Top Rank fighters weren't in slave contracts they would jump ship in a heartbeat. Good luck selling Bradley at a PPV star.
