  • Comments Thread For: Quigg's Trainer Rejects The Idea of Salinas Rematch

Scott Quigg's trainer, Joe Gallagher, has rejected suggestions that Quigg should be forced to take a rematch with Cuba's Yoandris Salinas. Quigg defended his WBA super-bantamweight title against Salinas on Saturday, courtesy of a majority draw. Two judges saw it 114-114, while the third marked it 115-113 to Quigg.

"It was a close fight, and everyone agrees about that," said Gallagher. "But the majority of people at ringside seemed to be of the opinion that Quigg won a narrow decision. This is just a backlash against what happened with (Ray) Beltran last month." (Beltran was awarded a draw against Scotland's Ricky Burns in Glasgow in a WBO lightweight title fight, when an overwhelming majority of observers had Beltran winning clearly).

Not surprised at this. Gallacher knows Salinas is all wrong for Quigg and the Cuban would've won a lopsided decision had he not broke his hand. A voluntary vs a brawler type inside fighter is what Quigg would thrive on

Can't say I disagree with Quigg's trainer, but a rematch wouldn't be the end of the world. The fight was close, because Scott won the second half of the bout. But if it's true Salinas injured is hand, it would explain why he unexpectedly slowed his activity in the later rounds. Yoandris isn't all that, but he might just be better than Quigg. I think that's what the trainer is really concerned about.

Anyone can say "I injured my hand" to explain why they lost the last few rounds of a fight.

            Yup, it's a common excuse.

Injury or not, Salinas was stylistically wrong for Quigg, and i can see why they would want to avoid a rematch at this point.

I'm not sure if Salinas can make big waves to get back into title contention unless he adds to his offense a little more, but neither men shown that world class ability that will keep them at the top unless matched carefully.

I think both Salinas and Quigg learned a lot from the fight, which will hopefully see them adapt their game and push on to be that little bit better.

Hearn won't be putting Quigg in with the pure boxer types again for a little bit me thinks.

Close but clear win for Scott Quigg, He Boxed with Salinas early and bullied him late. I thought he fought a smart fight and had it won by a solid 3 points. Throw in the fact that Quigg was champion (given the belt granted but champion no less) and on home soil and i half expected a 5 point lead for him from the judges.
No rematch needed vs a skilled and cagey Cuban like Salinas, He beat him fair and square already and it's not as if it's a big money fight or the first was Gatti vs Ward.
Both guys can move on and make good fights, Bring on Framps!

Whereas Quigg can only say "the guy clear outboxed me the first half"
I know which I'd prefer to be able to say

And it's not like Quigg did win either

Salinas did ****e in the second half for sure but maybe has an excuse and made it good enough to be a draw away from home
A rematch is certainly not in the slightest an outrageous idea
