  • Gatti-Damgaard: A Classic Throwback Battle

People were questioning Arturo Gatti, and what he had left; there were also questions about Thomas Damgaard, and his abilities. Both fighters answered for themselves in a dramatic way during their International Boxing Association (IBA) welterweight championship battle.

Broadcast live on HBO, this knockdown-drag out style fight thrilled the near sellout crowd (11,568 to be exact) at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City; from round one’s opening bell, until referee Lindsey Paige jumped in at the 2:54 mark of round eleven to save a weary and stunned Thomas Damgaard. You know what I'm thinking is "PATHETIC"? THIS POST!

Nobody is claiming Gatti is p4p #1. Nobody is saying he is a great fighter. But he's got guts, and tries his best to make up for what he lacks in skill with power and determination. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But I think we'd all agree it usually fun to watch him try. He's beaten some of the top fighters, and has really lost to very tough or very elite fighters for the most part. Cut the guy some slack. I'm sure he's heard "YOU SUCK! GATTI S*U*C*K*S!" and other such brilliant observations his entire career. Try stepping back and watching the fight, and watch a fighter give his all in the ring, every second of every round. And one who is willing to fight anybody. Fights through insane swelling, disgustingly gruesome cuts, and broken hands in order to finish fights, and sometimes prevails in spite of them. Step back, breathe, and relax. Gatti isn't SRR, but he's a exciting fighter to watch, and I think boxing would be better off today if more fighters possessed some of his courage, will, and determination.

You can "disregard" him, but I think the rest of us will realistically admire what he offers to the sport, which is much more than many fighters with twice his skill.

Just because he takes abuse, that doesnt make him great nor good. Get Gatti's balls out your mouth and make a fair evaluation of what Gatti has done in the ring [not much lately].

I really enjoyed that fight. I think it was Lampley at the end who said it was nothing special or something like that, but I definitely enjoyed it more than, say, the Ouma fight on Friday.

Gatti is a MUCH better watch than Ouma... any day of the week.

People need to take in consideration the caliber of Damgaard before they jump the gun in calling Gatti "good" or "great".

LOL Another genius! Yeah, am I on a message board or what? "Take his balls out of your mouth" seems to appear any time you offer any type of praise to any aspect of a fighter who someone else, for whatever reason, dislikes. *Yawn* *Yawn*

Who said he was "great"? Can you, um, read?

No, you're dumb and short sighted ass was trying to get down on others who are less than thrilled at his dominance of Damgaard.

Read it over again, ****** ass.
