Comments Thread For: Kevin Mitchell Eyes Showdown With Derry Mathews

Kevin Mitchell says he wants to challenge Derry Mathews for the Commonwealth title as he prepares for action at The O2 on Saturday night (October 5), live on Sky Sports.

Mitchell faces Marco Lopez for the vacant IBF Inter-Continental title on the bumper bill in Greenwich, and the former World title challenger hopes that victory will lead to a clash with the Liverpool man later in the year.

“A little dust up with somebody like Derry Mathews would show where I am at,” said Mitchell. “Ricky Burns is out of the picture at the minute and probably will be for a little while but give me Derry before Christmas and that will put me in good stead for a World title fight in the New Year. I am very confident. I am training very hard so I am up for anything.

Be a good domestic fight that. Matthews is always in exciting fights and Mitchell is always game for a scrap..which will probably be what this one would turn into.

I'd like to see this one.

Hopefully Mitchell can stay busy. We've heard this all before from him but he'll be 29 soon but has only fought four times since the Katsidis blow out.

Some tasty battles on the UK domestic scene though. The winner of Rees-Coyle is up there, Terry Flannigan is making a name for himself and Crolla v Mathews will ALWAYS be exciting - even when they're 90.

But hopefully they'll all stay busy.

If Mitchell want's something special to hang on the wall of his pie & mash shop then it needs to be a Lonsdale belt!

I wish Kevvers all the best and hope he gets at least one more crack at a world title. Granted, I wasn't backing him against Kats all those years ago, but in any other fight he's got my full support - I loved watching him make Prescott look silly, and the atmosphere in that arena was incredible live.

Entertaining fella, and a proper Londoner.

This would be a great domestic scrap which should hopefully end in a victorious Kev!
Matthews is on a good run at the moment but he has only faced gavin rees last year as the only top British lightweight. I still think the top lightweights in the UK are
Burns,Mitchell then murray if they are both in good shape and keeping busy
