  • Comments Thread For: Miguel Cotto: No Interest in 147, I'm Staying at 154

Former three division world champion Miguel Cotto (37-4, 30KOs) has no interest in moving back down to the welterweight division. A few days ago on BoxingScene Radio, Cotto's new trainer Freddie Roach made a statement that his boxer would likely do better at 147 than entertaining a move in weight to pursue a world title at 160-pounds.

Cotto moved up to junior middleweight in June of 2010. He takes his sixth fight at the weight on October 4th at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida - against rugged Delvin Rodriguez (28-6-3, 16KOs). Should Cotto win, there is the possibility of a 2014 encounter with WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez.

No-o-o-o-o-o-o! There goes my hopes for Marquez v Cotto. He just doesn't look good at '54, not for any 1 reason but a combination of reasons. He's short w/ short arms, he doesn't have good defense, he has average foot work, and he's abandoned the body work that he used to punish people with.

He got two losses at 54. One to the best fighter in boxing and the second to a guy that boxes pretty well and would give anyone trouble. Can we see how this plays out before we yell fire?

He's just delusional. He's gonna have a mediocre ending to a good career, bummer. Good talent, too.

But he hasn't really beaten anyone of note at 154 either. It really looks like Cotto's best days are behind him. I'm definitely rooting for the guy though. He has a huge heart and it's a shame that the cheater Margarito likely took something out of him years ago.

Told everyone this, he doesn't want to fight at WW. He's comfortable at JMW, that's where he is going to stay.

Yeah but I thought he was shot as well then he shows up and gives us a game performance against Floyd. Although Floyd won all the rounds primarily it was a competitive 10-2 or 9-3 fight. My thing is let it play out. Now what scares me more then anything is he's training with Roach lol

Canelo has good timing, defense, technique, and offensive arsenal to boot.

If Top Rank and Freddie can't convince Cotto to move back to 147, Canelo-Cotto will happen next. Until then, people can ********** to Canelo getting hurt by Jose and use that as their reasoning for Cotto winning...
                    Canelo-Cotto it is then...

Top Rank is going to have to get Cotto a JCC Jr or Sergio Martinez fight to stop him from going back to GBP. TR might be able to get him a Molina or Martirosyan fight (if he wins the title), but they'll be outbid by a Canelo fight because they have no Light Middleweights of note.
